Tendele Coal Mining (Pty) Ltd owns and operates the Somkhele Mine, located 85 kilometres North-east of Richards Bay in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Tendele mines Anthracite, a metallurgical coal used locally in the ferrochrome smelting industries and internationally in steel sintering and pellitizing processes.
Somkhele Mine is a major source of employment for local communities along with Africa Centre and the Umfolozi Sugar Mill. Small scale employment opportunities are also offered by local municipality and government departments found in the town of Mtubatuba. Somkhele Mine employs over 950 people, the majority of them being from the local community.
